Hemel Hempstead is an historic town, fairly close to London. It has many cafes and restaurants and tasty pub food can be found in the Old Town area where numerous quality establishments await. Hemel's finest restaurants are situated in the Old Town, serving international cuisine such as Thai or Italian. Marlowes is a Shopping Centre in the heart of the town, and is part of a pedestrianised area. Nearby, a traditional market sells everything from household goods through to fruit and vegetables. Antique hunters converge there every Wednesday.

Attractions within the town include the Water Gardens and one of Hertfordshire's prettiest streets, High Street. Leading from High Street are many shops dealing in angling supplies and also fine art.
