Durban International Airport is the smallest among the three declared international gateways in South Africa. It serves more than four million passengers every year and is a well-known budget car rental hub because of its location within the busy city of Durban. The airport may be relatively small but it offers a wide range of efficient services including banking assistance, childcare and dining options.

The airport is housed in a single terminal building which offers connections to other key cities in South Africa as well as international flights to destinations such as Dubai, Mauritius and London.

Information counters are located all over the airport. The tourism information office in the domestic Arrivals area offers information on various events and travel attractions in the city as well as hotel accommodation assistance. ATMs can be found at the Arrivals terminal on the ground floor while banks and currency exchange is in the International departures and in the arrivals terminals. Internet facilities and mobile phone hire are provided at the public concourse. Passengers will also find a pharmacy in the domestic Arrivals and a dedicated prayer room for Muslims. Dining options include bars, restaurants, pizzerias and a coffee shop. Duty free and regular retail options are also provided all over the airport. Options for car hire at the Durban Airport are provided by major rental agencies that have set up counters in the Arrivals areas.

Travelers normally arrange for cheap car hire at the Durban Airport through the internet but the airport is also connected to the city centre through airport shuttles that leave from the Departures terminal at regular intervals.
