Montpellier Rail Station is a budget car rental hub and one of the most popular entry points to the city. It serves TGV trains coming to and from several French cities including Lyon, Paris, Lille and Nice. There are also trains coming in from Barcelona. The rail station is also a suitable starting point for travelling to other famous destinations in Southern France.

The city centre is mostly a traffic-free zone so if you're going to arrange for car hire at the Montpellier Rail Station, it's best to leave it for later because you're going to spend most of your time downtown walking. There are a lot of notable landmarks that you must see in the old centre. These include the Les Jardin des Plantes (Botanical Garden), the Musee Fabre, La Place Royal du Peyrou and the La Place de la Comedie.

A leisurely stroll along the Esplanade is also in order while you're in the city. The area is lined with trees, benches and a number of al fresco restaurants. There are also a lot of stalls selling clothing and food all over the Esplanade.

For an additional dose of retail therapy, you might also want to head for centre-ville. This is where you can find a wide range of high-end clothing stores particularly on the main streets of rue Foch. If you're on a limited budget, you can always go to the Polygone shopping centre. Flea markets every Sunday morning are also quite common near Mosson.

After experiencing the whole of Montpellier, a day to the beaches and resorts of Cote d'Azur will complete your holiday. You can also visit Nimes where you can find some of the finest Roman remains in the country.
