For a small-sized town in the west of France, Bergerac is unexpectedly famous. Set in the stunning Dordogne region, the land of black truffle, this tourist-friendly destination offers easy access to surrounding wineries, chateaux and medieval towns like Sarlat-la-Caneda.

Bergerac attractions

There are two statues of the French dramatist Cyrano de Bergerac in the town centre, each with a plaque detailing his life's work. Besides being one of France's leading producers of wine, the town and wider region produces tobacco. The history of this industry is presented in the town's best museum, where ironically, smoking is not permitted.

Bergerac excursions

Bergerac's surrounding areas have plenty of vineyards for tourists to discover. Winery tours, during which visitors are shown the wine-making process and given the chance to sample the wine and purchase a bottle or two, operate throughout the year.
