The main air gateway into Egypt is Cairo International Airport. As the second busiest airport in Africa, it serves non-stop flights to a number of African, North American, Europian and Asian Cities and handles more than 14 million passengers every year. The airport is situated 22 km to the northeast of Cairo city centre in Heliopolis. While the airport serves a large number of tourists every year, facilities and amenities have yet to be modernized.
Cairo International has two terminals. Terminal 1 is dubbed the old terminal in reference to the relatively newer Terminal 2. Both serve international flights and are connected via complimentary shuttle services that leave each terminal every thirty minutes. Both terminals have information desks that are open round the clock. Other facilities include a bank, ATMs, bureaux de change and postal services located at the Departures halls. Options for cheap car hire at the Cairo International Airport are located by the arrivals halls.
Passengers will also find a basic restaurant at the airport that serves light meals and snacks. The Departures halls also have bars that provide a diverse menu of refreshments and cocktails. Gift shops, bookshops, clothing stores, newsagents and other retail outlets can be found at the Departures halls. Duty free shopping is also located at the departures as well as the Arrivals areas.
To get to the city centre, travellers usually arrange for cheap car hire at the Cairo International Airport although it's more recommended to book reservations through the internet for more convenience. Other transport options include taxi services located outside the Arrivals Hall.
